Title: Physical Eponimic Terms: Transition of Scientists Surnames by Abbreviations and Abbreviation Tools

Rubric: Natural Sciences

Language: Ukrainian

Abstract: The article is devoted to the reproduction of the scientist’s names in physical eponymous terms. Detected terms with complete and with incomplete reproduction of the last name and abbreviation. An attempt was made to characterize the physical eponymous terms-abbreviations, to trace the tendencies of their use in the modern Ukrainian physical terminology, to determine their specificity.

Note that eponymous terms that do not completely reproduce the name of a scientist can be considered an exception, since such terms in all cases come from seven names: Volta, Galvani, Faraday, Poiseil, Bose, Fermi, and Pomeranchuk.

In the Ukrainian physical terminology, the abbreviation is expanded as a result of the desire to save linguistic resources and the avoidance of complex and cumbersome language constructs. Obviously, there is an abbreviation among eponymous terms. Among them, we distinguish the initial abbreviations of two types: independent terms and components of terms-phrases. Note that the abbreviation is a subject only to the eponymous component. Other types of abbreviations (partial and mixed) do not occur among physical eponymous terms, because we cannot consider as abbreviations the units of physical quantities – mathematical symbols. The active use of eponymous abbreviations in the Ukrainian physical terminology demonstrates that this terminological system is develops in line with global trends. In recent decades, for the terminology of many languages, there is a tendency to adapt verbose word combinations with eponymous components to the needs of modern, complex scientific communication.
