Title: The Achievements and Perspectives of Development of Eastern Slavonic Explanatory Linguistic Terminography
Rubric: NATURAL SCIENCES
Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the intrinsically Ukrainian names of elementary substances of chemical elements. It emphasizes the need to eliminate forcibly introduced Russian terms from modern Ukrainian chemical terminology. It is proposed to use international terms for recent advances in chemical science, while for classical sections, natively Ukrainian terms should be used alongside international ones. For the names of chemical elements, it is recommended to apply Latinized forms based on the chemical symbols of the Periodic Table. To distinguish between the concepts of “chemical element” and “elementary substance”, it is suggested that the names of chemical elements be written with a capital letter, by analogy with the proper names of planets and the planetary substances that compose them. Chemical terminology should be based on modern scientific developments, adhere to international standards, and employ authentically Ukrainian terms for classical concepts. The names of chemical compounds should be genetically linked to the names of elements and comply with IUPAC rules or be as close to them as possible.
