Title: Paronymic Relations in Ukrainian Library and Bibliographic Terminology
https://doi.org/10.37919/2221-8807-2025-8-30
Rubric: Terminology of Humanities and Economic Sciences
Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of paronymy in the Ukrainian termi-nology of library and bibliography. The proposed study is the first attempt in Ukrainian linguistics to provide a comprehensive description of paronyms in the outlined terminology. Paronyms are close to homonymy, but, unlike homonyms, they are either synonyms or cognates.
The system of Ukrainian library and bibliographic terminology has numerous pairs (two words) and series (three or more words) of paronyms. It has been established that paronymy in Ukrainian library and bibliographic terminology differs in: a) prefixes: зчитування – вичитування; b) suffixes: мережевий – мережний; c) individual (present or absent) vowels or consonants in the root: анотація – нотація; d) presence or absence of a sound: адресант – адресат; e) genitive paradigm: адрес – адреса; f) singular or plural: кінодокумент – кінодокументи.
It has been found that in the Ukrainian library and bibliographic terminology, paronymy can be classified according to the following features: 1) by the degree of convergence of the sound de-sign of the morphemic composition: інтранет – інтернет; 2) by belonging to a certain terminological system: a) external: дефектність (перевірка примірника на дефектність) дефективність (medical). ); b) intrasystemic (каталогізація –каталогізування). 3) by part-of-speech: a) noun: перевірка (перевірка примірника на дефектність) – перевіряння (перевіряння наявності та стану одиниць зберігання; b) adjectival: communicative комунікативний (комунікативна спрямованість тексту) – комунікаційний (комунікаційна мережа); c) verbal (mainly due to consonant prefixes, less often – suffixes): визначати (визначати стан збереження книг) – відзначати (відзначати в каталозі).
Paronyms in Ukrainian library and bibliographic terminology are distinguished, in particular, by: 1) phonemic (адресат – адресант) and morphemic (декваліфікація – дискваліфікація) relations. 2) by the presence of a common root: monorooted (друкарський – друкований) and multirooted (абонент (абонент бібліотеки) – абонемент (бібліотечний абонемент).
Thus, the use of paronyms in Ukrainian library and bibliographic terminology is an important aspect of the formation and development of professional vocabulary. Therefore, their research, classification, unification and standardisation are important tasks for terminologists, which will contribute to the accuracy and efficiency of communication in the library and biblio-graphic sphere.
